How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Buy Humidifiers starts with one question: will this humidifier suit the room and the problem you have? A unit that works in a bedroom may be too small for an open living room.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your room and your air

A small bedroom, an open living area and a whole floor each need something different. We check the room size a maker claims for each model, and we say when your layout limits your choice.

We also say what a humidifier can't do. It adds moisture to one room, and it won't fix a leak, a damp basement or a home that is dry in every room.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at tank size, run time, mist type (cool, warm or evaporative), humidistat or app control, noise range and how you fill the tank. We also check what filters, wicks or cartridges the unit uses.

Levoit, DREO, Honeywell, Homedics, Vornado and other makers describe their units in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. Room-size and run-time figures come from the makers, not from our own lab work.

3. We count the upkeep

A humidifier that is hard to clean tends to get cleaned less often. We look at tank openings, parts that come apart and whether the maker allows the dishwasher or asks for vinegar.

We also note what wicks, filters or cartridges cost to keep running, and we always point you back to the maker's manual for cleaning steps.

4. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after living with a model. We look for patterns, like leaks, loud fans, a humidistat that reads too high and tanks that crack.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

5. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

6. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Many models also have look-alike versions with similar names, so we check each model number and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

Warm mist units heat water, so keep them out of reach of children and pets, and follow the maker's manual for every unit. We give no medical advice.
